First Baby Hippo Born in Bali

After a whopping 8 months of pregnancy, Dita has given birth to Bali`s first calf-born at Bali Safari & Marine Park. Born on 18 May 2010, the still-unnamed male baby hippo was born underwater at a weigh between 20-40 kg and must swim to the surface to take their first breath.

Dita, a 12-year old hippopotamus is brought from Taman Safari Indonesia Cisarua to Bali Safari & Marine Park since 2007. She is located in Lake Manyara as the home of hippopotamus in the park.

The herd keeper, Wayan Surata said that the calf`s mother, Dita, is very protective to the newborn. Wayan noticed something different with this mammal when the Hippo near to delivering the calf, `Dita doesn`t want to eat as much as she eats regularly. And stayed inside the pond longer than normal,` he explained.

Tim Husband the Curator of Life and Science Department said he was happy with the new calf. `The keepers take cares this Hippo very well. That makes this male baby hippo healthy,` he said. Hippos are herbivorous animal that very unpredictable. In their habitat of sub-Saharan Africa, hippos often attack anyone that occupies their territory. They do not like any other animal in their area. Hippos are the third-largest living land mammal, after elephants and white rhinos. Until now they are still threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their ivory.

As a conservation and education institution, Bali Safari & Marine Park is keeping the effort of breeding endangered animals. Not only to enrich the population in the park but also contribute to population of endangered animals in the world.

Sumatran Tiger Pair Making Love Nest in Zoo as Part of Bid to Grow Population

Banda Aceh. To provide them with the correct conditions to reproduce, two Sumatran tigers from Aceh’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency are scheduled to be moved to the Taman Safari Indonesia wildlife park in Bogor, West Java, the agency’s chief said on Monday.

Abubakar Chekmat said the agency, known as BKSDA, was scheduled to put both Cut Nyak, 5, and Salamah, 3, on a flight to Jakarta on Tuesday evening.

“It is no longer possible for both the tigers to be released to their natural habitat. Both are tame. Cut Nyak was even treated by a local resident before she was returned to BKSDA last year,” Abubakar told the Jakarta Globe. “If we release them to their natural habitat, the possibility that they will die is very high. We therefore decided to transfer them to Taman Safari. There will be a better chance for them to reproduce there, where they can be monitored by zoo officers.”

Bongot, a veterinarian from Taman Safari, confirmed on Monday that both tigers were physically healthy and ready for the flight to Jakarta, even though Salamah had lost one of her limbs following an emergency amputation after one of her feet got caught in a boar trap last year.

“They will first be tranquilized before they are flown off to Jakarta. They will be put in special cages,” Abubakar said, adding that he had previously reported the transfer plans to Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf, noting that BKSDA was overwhelmed with the responsibility of taking care of both tigers.

Yulius Suprihardo, spokesman for Taman Safari, said that the tigers would have a better chance of survival if they were transferred to the zoo.

“From our experiences we can conclude that they usually live longer in captivity,” Yulius said, adding that the transfer was an effort to prevent tigers from facing extinction.

“Today, Balinese tigers are extinct. We surely do not want that to happen with Sumatran tigers,” Yulius said.

Abubakar estimated that there were between 147 and 154 Sumatran tigers in Aceh, or about 22 percent of the remaining Sumatran tigers in the country.

As a form of social responsibility towards society, Bali Safari & Marine Park together with Sekolah Petra Berkat had invited 56 people with physical and mental disabilities from the Butterfly Foundation Bangli and Ubud for a vacation together on Thursday, June 3, 2010. Butterfly Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organization in Bali that concern on the living of people with disabilities.

Beside joined Safari Journey and watched Elephant Conservation Show, The Butterfly Foundation members also have the opportunity to meet Magic Trainer also Motivator Gobind Vashdev, the author of "Happiness Inside". Before the ceremony began, they put thumbprint in the canvas and draw it into butterflies.



Corporate Social Responsibility Program held regularly by the Bali Safari & Marine Park is good effort to educate and also motivate those who have disabilities said Gobind. "Man is like a butterfly, before they could fly he need to form a cocoon. In other words human beings are enlightened when they find something from themself." he said. Through this event, Gobind invites participants learn to find true happiness comes from inside. "Physical is just the wrapping of the potential beyond our self," he added. On that occasion also Gobind play some video stories of world successful people who have various limitations, which is expected to inspire and motivate them. "We may not be able to do great things all the time, but we can do small things with great love," he closed the session.



Bali Safari and Marine Park tried to gave information about endangered species that entertaining and increasing their knowledge even though they have physical or mental disabilities. "We are very grateful to Bali Safari & Marine Park that helpful to share happiness to less fortunate friends from the Butterfly Foundation in the activities of 'Let's be a Butterfly with Bali Safari," said Dra Yustine Indah Murni Chairman of the Foundation Sekolah Petra Berkat. Happiness of the Butterfly Foundation also shown by one of member of Butterfly Foundation, Gede Sukawati, that said he will come back to Bali Safari to watch the Elephant Show.

Through social events Bali Safari & Marine Park continues to realize its commitment to serving others as a form of appreciation of the community.
